Flavored Vape Cartridges | Terpenes & Heat Toxicity

About This Study

Extract Consultants presents a research-based analysis of the chemical mechanisms and resulting health ramifications of infusing terpenes and other commercial flavor molecules into cannabis distillates for consumption in vape cartridges.

An Analysis of The Safety of Terpene & Flavor Additives in Cannabis Vape Cartridges

This analysis delves into the crucial question of whether certain vaping scenarios pose risks to consumers' health, seeking to identify the root causes and potential solutions to ensure the safety of these products.

Understanding the Temperature Dynamics

The study sheds light on the critical role of temperature in the vaporization process. The terpenes tested in this study feature boiling points that are typically well below 400° F (204° C). If vaporization temperatures fall below the boiling point zone, consumers are deprived of the active chemicals they are seeking.

However, excessive temperatures result in the formation of residual solvents and other toxins. THC Distillate alone, with no terpenes or other cannabinoids, produces residual solvents at temperatures as low as 464°.

Reaching the right temperature zone for vaporization is critical. To sufficiently vaporize and activate terpenes in a cannabis distillate, temperatures need not, and should not, exceed 400° F.

Key Findings and Safety Reassurances

This scientific investigation reveals that temperature is the most significant environmental condition in the cannabis distillate vaporization process and a primary determinant of the chemical composition and overall health impact of the resulting vapor.

Laboratory tests conducted by the certified third-party laboratory, Supra Research and Development Inc. revealed encouraging results. It was found that when consumed within the recommended temperature parameters, cannabis distillate infused with terpenes and flavor molecules generally poses no discernible health risks (according to standards bodies such as the United States Pharmacopeia Convention).

The study suggests that flavored cannabis distillate, when vaporized at or below 400°F, remains a safe option for patients and consumers, with potential concerns arising only when temperatures surpass this threshold.

Advocating for Safer Industry Standards

By studying thermal degradation patterns, the research aims to guide the cannabis industry in implementing self-regulatory measures that prioritize consumer safety and well-being, paving the way for more responsible product development and consumption practices. The data collected in this study indicates that a logical and responsible vaporization target temperature for the legal cannabis industry is 400°F.

What are diluents?

Diluents, by scientific definition, are substances that dilute, or weaken, other substances that they're mixed with. They do this by essentially thinning out the other substance. Common examples of diluents include medium chain triglycerides (MCT oils), and propylene glycol (PG), which are also both substances that are commonly used in vape cartridges as a thinning agent.

Vape cartridges contain active extract material, terpenes, and a diluent. Our Solvent Free Terpenes contain zero thinning or diluting agents whatsoever, while our TasteBudds Flavors are based in either MCT or PG. Because of this, our terpenes are of the highest quality and are incredibly concentrated, and our diluent based flavors are highly concentrated as well, with a base concentration that's still 4-5 times stronger that most flavors today.
